Literary Summary of Victorian Age

After the death of Wordsworth, it seemed that the darkness of the space has come down on the earth as the most twinkling star of romantic poets had fallen down from the galaxy of literature. With the death of Wordsworth, the great romantic age ends. Keats, P. B. Shelley, Coleridge have already left the earth. It seemed that no English poet remained in that time and a great emptiness was created. Although Tennyson was writing much before the death of Wordsworth, he remained unknown till his collection of poems published in 1832. Similarly, Elizabeth Barrett had been writing since 1820. But, she was also remain unpopular till twenty years later did her poems become popular. In the case of Browning, people began to appreciate his writing almost 13 years later of the publication of his Pauline in 1833. In the mean time, a group of prose writers – Charles dickens, Thackeray, Carlyle, and Ruskin had begun to show their literary talent. These poets and writers take this age to a unique height just below the Elizabethan Age and the Romantic Age.
